By ID Talk, the podcast from ID Tech.

In the latest episode of the ID Talk podcast, Montaser Awal, IDnow’s Director of Research, outlined the company’s participation in Europe’s ACHILLES Project, emphasising efforts to develop transparent and ethical artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to address the rising threat of digital fraud, particularly deepfake technology.

Awal explains that ACHILLES, a European consortium of 16 partners, aims to create AI systems that are not only efficient but also fair, unbiased, and privacy-conscious. The ACHILLES Project focuses on optimizing AI training methodologies by prioritizing data quality over data quantity, aiming to produce models that require less energy, provide greater transparency, and reduce biases that are often found in facial verification technologies.

“The main idea behind Achilles is to rethink AI algorithms and methodologies, making them more trustworthy, transparent, and aligned with ethical and legal frameworks,” said Awal. He further emphasised that addressing biases and improving deepfake detection were critical aspects of the consortium’s objectives.

IDnow contributes its expertise by testing AI algorithms developed under ACHILLES in real-world identity verification scenarios, enabling the consortium to refine technologies for practical applications. Awal described IDnow’s broader approach as “fighting fire with fire,” leveraging advanced AI technologies to proactively combat sophisticated fraud attempts that also increasingly rely on AI.

Inclusion can be a “precondition of obtaining ID and access to lots of services”, said Christina Hirsch.

Inclusion is an important part of women’s lives and career journeys. Inclusion means everyone can have access to services and trust those services work for the customer. Regarding recent failures in the trust of the internet, distribution of harmful content and AI algorithms, this precedent of trust has never been so important.

Digital products that offer the best customer experience all-round are engineered by talented people from different backgrounds and fields, and it’s safe to say, large-scale initiatives such as eIDAS and the AI Act harness all expertise to innovate how we consume these highly-diffused technologies within our society.

Christina Hirsch, EVP Digital Trust Business at Swisscom took part in our Transformative Women series of interviews. We spoke last month in anticipation of a panel at Identity Week Europe, 17-18 June, which will present women’s takes on achieving equilibrium in our workforce, workplace policies i.e. flexibility, the output of technologies and opportunities to experience the sector through education.

Attend the Transformative Women industry panel on 18 June, with these speakers:

  • Claire Maslen, Advisor, Mobile Ecosystem Forum
  • Kay Chopard, Executive Director, Kantara Initiative, Inc
  • Viky Manaila, President, Cloud Signature Consortium

Identity verification is available to over 700 million LinkedIn members across 50 countries and expanding for the whole professional community by 2025.

ID verification underscores the trust of employers, recruiters and candidates using LinkedIn as an online job marketplace.

In this interview, Julie Madhusoodanan scopes the integration of ID processes into the popular platform, with AI automation also used to detect fake accounts. We discuss the three components of verification that LinkedIn employs to ensure different aspects of a member’s profile is authentic.

She says “LinkedIn is always looking for new methods of verification”, through government-issued ID, a selfie or passkeys authenticated through their third-party services, Persona and CLEAR. Third party providers have sole access to user information.

Employing authentication, passwordless technology and a team of experts, LinkedIn successfully removes 99.6% of fake accounts in violation of their policies.

This interview asks:

  • What regions has ID verification now expanded to? Will you meet the target of verifying 100 million people by 2025?
  • Across LinkedIn’s categories of verification, do these methods give assurance of the real user, for example using selfie biometrics?
  • Why have you chosen to partner with ID providers like Persona?
  • Does LinkedIn have a problem with fake profiles?
  • Have you got plans to transition away from password authentication?

The current focus of digital identity for citizens covers C2G and C2B but does not extend to B2B, B2G, or B2Banks, nor to the exchange of digital data with the private sector via the Company Passport.

Banks and enterprises are eager to see the business use cases of wallets reflected in legislation. The eIDAS 2.0 legislation, which was introduced in April 2024, mainly focuses on the natural persons wallet and a high adoption rate among citizens interacting with governments, relying parties and banks. However, as Mark Hanhart, Innovation & Design Expert at ABN AMRO Bank N.V. explains in this interview, the business-to-business realm needs to be prioritised within wallets and legislation too.

Hanhart expanded on the key points of his presentation at Identity Week Europe 2025 to offer a banking perspective on why the interoperability of eIDAS 2.0 is in the interests of businesses for convenience, as well as citizen services. Businesses need legal certainty which eIDAS 2.0 provides and this has led to the creation of the Company Passport.

The “technology and platform there for citizens (in eIDAS 2.0) will thrive for businesses”, he says simply.

In the Netherlands, the company passport exists that ensures data can be exchanged from business to business more efficiently via machine to machine, keeping costs down and being legally binding.

Organisations, such as banks, need a digital identity, in the form of the Company Passport, to verify other organisations in B2Business and B2Bank transactions as well as B2C.

Companies hold AML-standard KYC in their own wallet. Whereas companies currently come to banks filling in their data manually or being sourced from a register, eIDAS wallets will have the information, enabling machine-to-machine interaction passing along data.

ARTICLE UPDATE on January 29, 2025The announcement of a European Business Wallet as a flagship initiative in the European Commission EU Competitiveness Compass 2025 was made on January 29, 2025. Also called the Competitiveness Compass, the Business Wallet will drive business “digitally” and “simply” around EU member states and build the interoperability between digital economies. The mandate outlines a strategic and clear framework on what is eventually expected of each countries’ infrastructure for the legal persons wallet.

The latest episode of ID Talk brings together Danielle VanZandt, Industry Manager for Frost & Sullivan’s Security Practice, and Alan Goode, CEO and Chief Analyst of Goode Intelligence, to discuss key trends shaping digital identity in 2025.

Hosted as always by Alex Perala and Tony Bitzionis, the conversation covers the European Union’s Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI), which is set for rollout in 2026, with pilot programs and regulatory developments expected to take shape this year.

The discussion also touches on the UK’s renewed push for digital identity, with the government’s recent mobile driver’s license initiative raising questions about its impact on existing identity verification frameworks.

Age verification remains a major topic as governments introduce new regulations for social media, online commerce, and adult content. The conversation examines recent developments in the UK, Australia, and the US, as well as the growing role of biometric authentication in regulatory compliance. In retail, biometric payments continue to gain traction, with new deployments of face and palm vein recognition systems. However, widespread adoption remains dependent on merchant buy-in and integration with existing payment infrastructure.

The travel industry continues to expand its use of digital credentials, with biometric boarding, digital passports, and partnerships between airlines and identity solution providers driving innovation. The conversation highlights successful implementations and the potential for broader applications beyond air travel. Meanwhile, the rise of AI-driven fraud, including deepfake and synthetic identity attacks, remains a pressing concern. The discussion covers the latest countermeasures, such as liveness detection and AI-driven fraud prevention, and considers the long-term impact of rapidly advancing generative AI models.

The episode concludes with a bit of lighthearted speculation about a major and oft-delayed biometric project in Europe—drawing, of course, on the expertise of the interlocutors.

As a visionary biometrics leader, iProov tailors its solutions to recognise the diverse technological adoption and regulatory landscapes across all regions. As this interview reveals, there is a spectrum of new and old attacks where information can be spread very quickly to enable these frauds across the globe.

Fraud can happen anywhere so whilst threat management may vary from region to region, iProov is firmly committed to tried and proven biometric technologies which assure the genuine presence of a user in real-time.

Deepfake fraud is a global threat that not many companies are truly good at tackling, says Dominic Forrest, iProov’s Chief Technology Officer. It is no longer enough to install available software against deepfakes without monitoring by a team of experts and regular updates. In Q1 2024 in the APAC region, iProov released over 100 updates to protect their software against deepfakes and any form of attack.

Mobile penetration is very high in the APAC region, and mobile-first solutions are often preferred. iProov is also leveraging this trend to deliver user-friendly and accessible biometric authentication solutions.

After carefully exploring how to give access to an identifiable person and not an identity, Founder Klaas Zwart had a destination that could be reached using B-FY’s passwordless, decentralized biometric identification protocol.

B-FY decodes identity, reconnecting the term back to the human requesting an access and creating technology used properly to assess a human’s real characteristics.

The key point about B-FY’s advanced security solution is that it eliminates traditional forms of identity, removes the need for passwords, swipe cards, or biometric patterns, which can be impersonated. Their protocol identifies individuals directly, making it impossible to hack or impersonate. Eliminating fraud and protecting privacy.

Topics: Automation for increased accounts and IAM to tackle the proliferation of human and non-human identities.

With more connected cars and automated systems, the automotive industry is also wrapped up in embracing identity and access management to protect data. Kulsharest Jain, Senior Solutions Architect at Mercedes Benz Singapore, explains why IAM is relevant to the commercial and automated functions of the business, with AI pushing the automotive sector to further safeguard users and corporate identities from mass data breaches.

“Some of the ways we are helping is using multi-factor authentication which reduces risk”.

Audit and reviews are helping to assess internal threats, but additionally, data and behavioural analysis is capable of detecting anomalies that indicate external threats. This interesting conversation delves more into their starting path with traditional IAM and moving away with the general industry view of considering human and non-human false identities to approach identity governance. Moreover, with so many accounts, automation is key to identity orchestration and in terms of the review.
