The inauguration of MSC Cruises Miami Terminal took place this past weekend, marking a historical day for the largest cruise terminal in the world. 

With the new terminal unveiled, the facility provides cruisers with a total biometric experience matching their face to their security document digitally to validate their identity before boarding. 

Vision-Box, their biometrics partner, was present to witness such an “outstanding accomplishment” of delivering biometric solutions across their sea ports come to fruition, according to Jean-Francois Lennon, Senior Vice President of Global Business Development Border Authorities, at Amadeus.

“We are extremely proud to be part of this iconic transformative program”.

The Amadeus company has created an end-to-end Seamless Travel platform enabling digital identity verification on embarkation and debarkation as the greater new terminal can cater for higher passenger volumes. Necessary to keep up with more passenger demand and innovation, the 492,678 square foot cruise terminal can process up to 36,000 cruise passengers a day. MSC Cruises’ new flagship liner, MSC World America, lives at the home port, PortMiami. 

After biometric verification, there are 20 security lanes for passengers to complete the embarkation process to ensure just as much safety is prioritised as airport travel. And the final procedure is to pass through the biometric e-gates, kick-starting a memorable experience for all MSC Cruises’ guests which comes down to “remarkable digital innovations”, including embracing the digital ID wallet and allowing biometric terminal access for frictionless travel.

Collaboration to push the current understanding and capabilities of deepfakes detection technologies lies at the centre of addressing this “urgent national priority”.

Deepfakes have spiked over the last few years with innovations of artificial intelligence accelerating. The latest AI model called DeepSeek, which only launched in January, has rattled other global AI competitors and put the US on the backfoot to defend its own famous creation, ChatGPT.

A project 8 million deepfakes will be shared in 2025, an increase of 500,000 from 2023, with many criminal and exploitative repercussions. Just some of the harmful activities AI-generated deepfakes can enable range from online child sexual abuse, stolen identities and election fraud.

As a result, the acceleration of deepfake detection tools must be commissioned. A big event in the space is led by a cohort including the Home Office, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, ACE and the renowned Alan Turing Institute. The Deepfake Detection Challenge aims to source and raise solutions that are capable of detecting fake media. 150 people attended proposing challenge statements for how current tools could be pushed further.

With 17 submissions, approximately two million products were created using balanced training datasets made up of real and synthetic data.

Within the time limits of the challenge work, it was clear that curated and representative data of operational scenarios enabled the communities coming together, as well as advancing the deepfake detection technology.

Data was a top priority in the commissions to the ACE. ACE leveraged its expertise from the Deepfake Detection Challenge to create a reusable ‘gold standard’ dataset designed to “effectively” test detection tools by vendors.

Inclusion in any workplace is a basic right. In technology industries in particular, male professionals seriously outweigh women. A lack of diversity in talented people working on the development of complex technologies like AI, blockchain, or digital identity can impact the product in terms of creating accessible identities. 

In the report we explore the power of inclusive workforces on technology, the gendered impacts of technology around bias, and reflect on womens’ experiences from education and exposure to tech sectors, to mentorship and flexibility with juggling society’s pressures, childcare and taking career breaks. 

Technology should be built for everyone by everyone to ensure the outcome of a product delivers on benchmarks of inclusion for example, privacy, security, usability and interoperability.

Inclusion can be measured in terms of how many people own a form of official identification that enables their lives, as well as if it protects their privacy. Citing research from Osservatori Digital Innovation, Politecnico di Milano, we examine the diffusion of digital ID systems between men and women across the EU ecosystem, with men quicker to adopt technologies and specifically the legal persons identity in Italy. 

Out of 850 million people who lack any form of ID across the globe, women in low-income countries are 8% less likely to own an ID than men.
