Germany's interior minister has called for facial recognition to be installed at major border points to boost national security amid rising terrorism fears.Speaking to German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Thomas de Maiziere said the biometric tech could be used to check against watchlists."There are opportunity for individuals to photograph someone and use facial recognition software on the internet to find out if they have seen a celebrity or a politician," De Maiziere says."I would like to use this kind of facial recognition technology in video cameras at airports and train stations. Then, if a suspect appears and is recognised, it will show up in the system," he told the paper. He said face recognition is already being piloted for unattended luggage, likely in conjunction with movement analytics."The authorities must use technology they are legally allowed to use," he says. However, Konstantin von Notz, a spokesman for the Green Party on digital issues, told DPA news agency that the technology would entail enormous costs and, in his view, should only be used in certain events."For example, if one had a concrete indication of a planned attack at an airport."
