In its comprehensive 2024 State of Security Industry Report, HID Global, a leader in identity solutions, has unveiled key trends shaping the future of security based on feedback from over 2,600 global security and IT professionals. The findings highlight the growing emphasis on mobile identities, multi-factor authentication, sustainability, biometrics, cloud-based identity management, and artificial intelligence.
According to the report, mobile identities are set to become nearly universal in the next five years, with 80% of end-users predicting their widespread adoption and industry partners even more optimistic at 94%.
With over 83% of organisations currently using MFA, the shift away from password-dependency is clear. However, the report indicates a slower but growing implementation of Zero Trust architectures, currently in place in up to 16% of larger organisations. The development of standards like FIDO heralds a move toward more secure authentication options.
Sustainability considerations are increasingly influencing business decisions, with the report noting significant importance among both end-users and industry partners. Efforts include minimising energy use and waste while optimising resource usage, with a noticeable shift towards cloud-based solutions and mobile device utilisation.
The survey found that 39% of installers and integrators report current use of fingerprint or palm print technologies, with facial recognition also on the rise. With planned expansions, biometrics continue to build momentum in security applications.
Nearly half of the surveyed end-users are moving or planning to move to cloud-based identity management systems, overcoming challenges such as legacy system dependence and budget constraints.
AI is being looked to for its potential in analytics to bolster identity management, with 35% of end-users exploring or implementing AI capabilities within the next few years, including AI-enabled biometrics.
HID Global’s report underscores the significance of these trends in shaping proactive security strategies and the importance for leaders to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving landscape.
