Spain has officially passed a Royal Decree launching a new mobile-based digital ID system, allowing citizens to carry and use their national identity cards directly from their smartphones. Phase One of implementation commenced the day after the decree was published, which will support identity verification for citizens in face-to-face interactions with government services or authorities. Phase Two will expand support for online identification and electronic signatures.

Despite the rollout of MiDNI, physical ID cards will continue to coexist with their digital counterparts and will not be replaced.

To activate the digital ID, users must complete a three-step registration process, first linking their citizen ID to a mobile phone number to ensure it is securely connected to the device.

Citizens can register through the website www.midni.gob.es, or at Documentation Update Points.

A single-use code system will confirm the connection between the ID and phone number. Only one ID can be linked to each mobile number.
