Intensified competition in the East Asian fingerprint sensor market will see prices for each unit fall to under US$5 in the region this year, reports Taiwan-based media.Taiwan-based Elan Microelectronics, FocalTech Systems, Egis Technology (Egistec), Pixart Imaging and Image Match Design (IMD) are all set to roll out new fingerprint sensor solutions during the first half of 2015, reported DigitTimes.China-based IC design firms including Goodix and Silead also plan to enter mass production of their in-house developed fingerprint sensors, the sources indicated. While the price for fingerprint sensors is currently as high as US$7-8, the manufacturing cost for fingerprint sensors built using 0.18-micron process technology is around US$3, sources at Taiwan-based IC design houses told the magazine. This means that a number of regional manufacturers will be able to accommodate the price drop. However, suppliers who cannot compete could be squeezed out of the market, warned the source.Last November, DigitTimes reported that rising orders by China's smartphone makers were helping domestic firms expand their presence in the expanding fingerprint sensor market.Shanghai-based design firm Silead has secured fingerprint sensor orders from Coolpad and ZTE, with mass shipments already kicking off.Meanwhile, Swedish sensor maker Fingerprint Cards announced plans this week to tap the Chinese market through an agreement with China-based touchscreen manufacturer O-Film to develop fingerprint modules for smartphones.
