Travellers will soon pass through immigration clearance at Changi Airport token-less. Starting today, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority has eliminated passport rules for arriving Singapore travellers at automated e-gates in Terminal 3, with full implementation expected all terminals by September. Some passengers will still need to carry their passport whilst the scheme is rolled out and for overseas immigration and occasional verification by ICA.

This new system will use facial and iris scanners to verify passengers’ identities. The initiative is part of ICA’s efforts to automate immigration and improve efficiency.

By December, similar biometric systems will be available at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. Additionally, QR code immigration clearance will be extended to motorcyclists and bus passengers throughout the year building on the 70% who currently use QR codes. Cargo vehicle drivers will also benefit from QR code clearances by the end of August.

Singapore residents will enjoy passport-free clearance for both arrivals and departures at air and sea checkpoints. Foreign travellers will benefit from passport-free departure clearance. However, children under six years old are excluded due to the inability to undergo biometric scanning.

By 2025, these features will extend to Seletar Airport, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, and HarbourFront Centre, solidifying Singapore’s position as a global leader in immigration technology.
