A report published by Osservatori Digital Innovation del Politecnico di Milano categorises the digital identity landscape as undergoing profound change, driven the parameters of eIDAS 2.0, the EU Commission’s international regulation to provision interoperable digital wallets throughout the EU ecosystem. Each member country is observed for their adoption of the wallet model to manage user identity credentials and allow verification for citizens and businesses with online transactions. There is now momentum for the development of national digital identity wallets, developed publicly or by private technology vendors. The statistics of the diffusion of digital ID for legal and natural persons, researched by the Politecnico di Milano, were recently used in our report, ‘Transformative Women: Women’s inclusion in the evolving identity industry’
Translated from Italian, they have now published the first of two reports in English that provide the full body of their research based on the census of international cases of digital identity (2020) and (2023).
The report assesses:
- How widespread are digital identity wallet projects?
- What are the characteristics of wallet based digital identity systems at international level?
- What are the most common attributes within digital identity wallets and their applications?
- What are the strategies used by different countries for the development of digital identity wallets?
The results of direct tests on some wallets are illustrated, with a focus on the attributes contained and the methods of access and presentation of credentials. Furthermore, the report presents the strategies adopted by the governments of European countries to develop the national digital identity wallet.
