Iris recognition solutions firm Delta ID has reported that OEM adoption of the modality on mobile devices is seeing accelerated growth, while adding that a survey it commisioned suggests users can prefer iris to fingerprint authentication.Delta ID noted that several major OEMs have incorporated iris technology in their mobile devices in recent months, including Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL, Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris SM-T116IR, and HP Elite X3.Samsung's tablet is the world's first tablet compatible with India's UIDAI and enables a host of applications in government, enterprise and consumer sectors. HP Elite X3 is the world's first smartphone with both fingerprint and iris biometrics technology.In its statement, Delta ID noted a recent survey it conducted with Macromill of Japan that found that consumers prefer the experience of using their iris to unlock their devices.In the survey, users were asked to share their experience of using biometric unlock in their smartphones. Only iris and fingerprint enabled smartphones were considered from Fujitsu, Sony, Sharp, Samsung and Apple.The survey included several hundred users and found that the number of consumers using biometric unlock was 50% higher for iris-enabled smartphones than fingerprint-enabled smartphonesIt also noted that 90% of the users of iris unlock were satisfied with the functionality and that speed and accuracy of iris unlock were the most appealing aspects.”We are thrilled to see consumers enjoying the convenience of Look to Unlock their smartphones, make payments, and get access to secure applications,” said Salil Prabhakar, president and CEO of Delta ID, referring to the firm's solution.”We are seeing continued increase in excitement around this technology amongst all major smartphone manufacturers, and we soon expect this technology to be adopted in other areas that need convenience and security such as in tablets, banking and even in cars in the future.”See here for an interview with Delta ID's CEO where he discusses iris on mobile.
