Switzerland’s future e-ID has a name, SWIYU, as revealed during a technical meeting to plan how it can be integrated most seamlessly into citizens’ lives in 2026. The Federal Council was informed of the name given to the trust infrastructure when it goes live. At the same time, principles of the e-ID design and its technical implementation were discussed during the meeting.

The technical delivery of the e-ID will involve both the development and establishment of the trust infrastructure, guaranteeing protection of privacy and interoperability.

Different technologies are needed to ensure the e-ID fulfils both requirements, although the Federal Department of Justice and Police found that only one technology can be compatible with the introduction of the e-ID in 2026. Further pilots will endeavour to find other solutions that can be used with the future e-ID.

In summary, the e-ID and its trust infrastructure must be “secure and useful”, reflecting the brand values in the design and chosen name. Accent colours used in the mixed colour palette are taken from the holographic security features of existing Swiss identity documents.

The multicoloured gradations on the e-ID credential represents the “diversity and vitality” of unique identities among the population of Switzerland.

Multicoloured, dynamic gradations are used on the e-ID credential. They represent the diversity and vitality of the individual identities of the population in Switzerland. The aesthetic of the e-ID contributes to the overall usability and inspires security.
