The work of Trust & Safety professionals is largely misunderstood as they play a critical role in creating a safer digital ecosystem. A report called “Advancing Trust & Safety” has been published elaborating on their duties and right to “act in the best interests of society, citizens and users”.
As the sector is often inhibited by policy making, the report is aimed towards regulators and governments, as well as tech companies, T&S professionals and membership organisation to empower the Trust & Safety workforce and business models that currently deprioritise safety.
The T&S profession faces barriers to incentivising more people to join the sector such as the absence of a formal mandate, safety metrics and working conditions. Recommendations are outlined in the report to support T&S by embedding safety in product design from the outset and governance structures to ensure company leaders are accountable for professional standards.
Beyond the quota of T&S professionals in the sector, legislation should ensure “digital products and services are age-appropriate, safe, private, secure, and rights-respecting by design”.
