Biometric hardware production could benefit from India’s grant for digital identity in Sri Lanka. The digital ID investment will inject the economy and drive a huge demand for biometric hardware from local manufacturers.
Giving an interview to Biometric Update, Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, said “The Department of Registrar of Persons has launched the ENIC project which is a part of the Total Digital ID project. For both these we need biometric data capturing”.
Local companies supplying biometric products could be tendered for digital identity solutions. Moveover, the government wants to explore all revolutionary technology transforming economies and the global status of countries seen to be embracing digitalisation for citizens and businesses.
The government’s vision of digital ID goes hand-in-hand with strengthening mobile connectivity and the rollout of 5G with the Telecommunication Regulation Commission to enable digital capabilities. The commission plans 276 towers driving the underlying connectivity to bolster the digital economy and invest in technologies such as, IoT, AI and cloud computing.
